DATE: 2008/07/21 REVIEWER: Squid® CIGAR: NUb Habano SIZE: 460 (which translates to 4.0x60) ORIGIN: Nicaragua WRAPPER: Habano BINDER: Nicaragua FILLER: Nicaragua SHAPE: NUb Shape, short barrel AGE: In my humidor for three weeks VENDOR: Cigar Cigar! FACTORY BLURB: The idea for the NUb CIGARS came from the theory that a cigar finds its "sweet spot" at the 3.5 - 4 inch point. No "NUb" is longer than 4 inches. Further adding to this complex theory, the ring gauges range from 56-66. The result is a range of smokes that have the same amount of tobacco as any Churchill or even Presidente. Unbelievably, they also smoke as long. The NUb cigars available in three wrappers: Habano, Cameroon, and Connecticut. There are three sizes shared by all wrappers plus an additional size which is unique to each wrapper. The flavor range is from mild to full but always complex and hearty. AMBIENCE: I smoked this sitting in the member's library at Cigar Cigar in a comfortable leather chair, listening to a blues variety. Nice to be in the A.C. as it's almost a hundred degrees outside today in Houston. Sitting out on the front porch in the early morning with a cup of coffee and a fine cigar. Weather is warm but a bit of cloud cover has kept it reasonable. Relatively low humidity for Houston, and no breeze. BEVERAGE: A cup of steaming hot black coffee. APPEARANCE: The Habano NUb has a smooth, dry non-oily wrapper with a few veins showing. The stick was a tad bit spongy, because of the ring gauge. PRE_LIGHT: There was almost no appreciable odor in testing before I lit this cigar. DRAW: Note that I recommend punching a NUb instead of cutting the cap. This is because the large ring guage and short length sometimes cause the stick to get hotter than one might like. The draw had almost perfect resistance. FIRST_THIRD: Gave off sort of a woody taste with a slight nutty flavour in the background. Good solid single flavor profile. SECOND_THIRD: Continued the same but began to get a slight bit spongy in the feel. My personal preference would be to store these around 60% RH for a while before smoking. FINAL_THIRD: Developed a little spiciness towards the end, but never became the slightest bit harsh. NUbs really need to be smoked slowly, as any huffing and puffing will definitely heat up the cigar too rapidly. BURN: Another perfect burn! When first lighting a NUb, take a little time to insure that it's burning all the way around, as a canoe or burn problem would be almost unfixable on a cigar this short. ASH: Squid® doesn't usually "do ash", but this NUb got almost a two inch ash before I knocked it into the ashtray. Ash was light mottled grey, and just a bit flakey. SMOKE: This cigar put out quite a bit of woody tasting white smoke. STRENGTH: The NUb Habano is solidly in the medium strength category. FLAVOUR: Habano wrappers are always a bit difficult for me to pin down in the flavour category; but I'll note that I tasted wood (cedar) and a nutty undertaste with a bit of spice. FINISH: No appreciable after-taste which is perfect for most people. SMOKE_TIME: This stubby little guy took almost an hour to complete. IMPRESSION: Although I'm definitely hooked on the NUb Connecticut wrapper, this is the first of the Habano wrapper that I've smoked. Although it's a single-dimensional non-complex cigar, the taste is good throughout. I'm going to stock a box in my personal rotation from now on! RATING: 7 out of a possible TEN wooden matchsticks. COMMENTS: I'll note that coffee was not the best choice for a beverage with this cigar. Next time I'll stick with ice water or possible a white soda like Sprite or 7-Up. <G> |
