Aging Your Cigars – Well Worth the Wait

By Jeff Bernhard

Over my 9 years in the cigar business, I have learned several things about fine cigars.   One of the most important lessons that I have learned is that the price of the cigar has nothing to do with quality of it.    I have also learned that if you age your cigars 2-3 years, in ideal conditions, people love the taste of these aged cigars.

Much like wine, cigars settle and blend together over a few years of aging.   A bold cigar will typically turn into a medium-to-bold cigar and a medium bodied cigar to a mild cigar.    Two years ago, I bought 4 bundles of a full bodied cigar that was offered to me at $18.00 per bundle.   Please understand that these long filler un-banded cigars had excellent appearance and good construction, but the price was much less than I was used to.   I had never paid .70 for a cigar that I really enjoyed, but that would all change two years later.

Recently, I gathered with 4-5 friends at Cigar Cigar that were all experienced cigar smokers.   These are guys that typically buy $7.00 to $12.00 cigars from our store humidor.   Some were, what many would people would refer to as, cigar snobs.   Needless to say, after each enjoyed these affordable, aged robusto cigars, each of them asked me where I purchased them and how they could get a few.

When you age a cigar, the best of the cigar comes to life. The leaves create all different types of flavors you would not get smoking a cigar two months after it was rolled.   In addition, I have not smoked any of my aged cigars that have not had a perfect ash, if lit properly.

I liked these cigars so much that Cigar Cigar and PhoenixCigar.com will be dedicating part of our store humidor to a cigar aging section.   We will be aging cigars for 1-2 years for customers under ideal conditions.   Each bundle with have a label with the customers name on it and will sit in the humidor for a year or two.    The hard part will be keeping the customers hands off their cigars and give them time to sit.

Here is what you should try.   Start by ordering a few bundles from our online store that are listed below.

  • Alcazar
  • National Brand
  • Flor De Copan
  • P1 by Cusano
  • The Brick by Torano

Remember to age them one to two years in 70/70 conditions in your humidor.  You won’t be disappointed and will save a few dollars in your cigar budget.
